Faith + Doubt: What Does it Mean to Believe? (Hadar + the Den)

Join our friend, Rabbi Avi Strausberg, of Hadar DC for this three-part learning series co-sponsored by the Den. See below for a list of dates for the classes offered in Dupont Circle and Columbia Heights.

Many people believe that faith is the foundation of a religious life. But, what does it mean to have faith? What must we have faith in and what happens when we don’t believe? What does faith look like in a moment of crisis?

In this three part home-hosted learning series, we’ll turn to the teachings of Rabbi Kalonymous Kalman Shapira, who wrote from the Warsaw Ghetto, as an opportunity to reflect honestly about our own relationship to faith and to explore what it might mean to be a person of faith in all times but perhaps especially in moments of struggle. We encourage you to try to make it to all three but don’t let that stop you from signing up!

Please register here for Dupont Circle and here for Columbia Heights.

Dupont Circle: Wednesdays 3/13, 4/10, 5/8 (8-9:15pm)

Columbia Heights: Wed., 2/21, Wed., 3/20, Mon., 4/15 (8-9:15pm)

This learning series is made possible through the generous support of the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington and is co-sponsored by the Den Collective.  Everyone is welcome.

Hike + Learn: Spiritual Grounding During the Omer

We’ll enjoy a hike in the great outdoors and then break for learning over snacks. We’ll explore the spiritual grounding and renewal practice of counting the Omer that takes place during the weeks between the festivals of Passover and Shavuot.

Beginning on the 2nd night of Passover, we count the Omer, for 49 days, until we arrive at the festival of ShavuotCounting the Omer began as a count toward the spring harvest, and it has evolved into a spiritual accounting. The Omer is a period for introspection and personal growth, in preparation for receiving the Torah on Shavuot.

Hiking and learning in nature will provide us with an ideal setting for looking inward and discovering new places for us to stretch and grow. Everyone welcome, this will be a hike suitable for folks at various levels.

We will meet up at a DC hiking spot. Details will be shared with registrants. Sign up below by Thursday, May 2nd @ 10am.

Taste of Talmud: Historical Hanukkah Flavors

There is a rich history of rich, savory Jewish food, but where does it come from? Many of the beloved Jewish foods, recipes, rituals surrounding food, cooking methods, and more can be traced back to the discussions of the rabbis in the Talmud. The sages gathered around in their beit midrash, house of study, to debate and discuss all kinds of foods that are inherently part of Jewish practice, or have become a part of Jewish culture.

We are going to celebrate Hanukkah as we explore global historical cuisine inspired by the holiday. There are various versions of delicious fried foods that have developed in different regions and cultures across the globe, and we’re going to learn about their history while we enjoy tasting them too!

Queering the Torah: Chosen Family

Queering a text means to read, explore, and connect to that text through a queer lens; it’s a queer reading of source material. Queering the Torah means we explore all things Jewish (texts, sources, traditions, rituals, etc) through the lens of LGBTQIA+ identities. Through this exploration, our aims are to connect our queer identities to our Judaism, to create a safe space for sharing, and to establish a sense of community, camaraderie, and belonging.

Join Rabbi Jenna for an afternoon for safe space, sharing, and learning - from Jewish wisdom and each other - about chosen family, and the need for relationships built on mutual support + love.

This experience is designed specifically for folks who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Hike + Learn: the Divine in Nature

The spiritual realm and the natural world are often thought of as two separate planes of existence. Judaism, however, understands that the spiritual and the physical exist together, simultaneously - we cannot have the natural without the spiritual. How do we connect our spirituality + the Divine presence with the grounding, presence, and connections we feel in nature? Join the Den for a hike through nature and a discussion connecting that experience with our spiritual consciousness.

This gathering will be held in DC close to NoVA. All are welcome!

JCADA Purple Shabbat: Raising Awareness

JCADA Purple Shabbat: Raising Awareness

Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) is recognized every October. JCADA created  Purple Shabbat as an opportunity to raise awareness about intimate partner  violence in the Jewish community, to let the community know that JCADA is here to help, and to reinforce that our Jewish communities are safe spaces. By recognizing DVAM and Purple Shabbat, we hope to shine a light on this dark topic.

Together we can help make a real difference for victims and survivors in our spaces.

A reflection on this week’s Parashah (Torah portion) as it relates to Intimate Partner Violence (IPV):

Lech Lecha and IPV (October 28, 2023)

Parshat Lech Lecha tells us the story of Avram and his wife Sarai, who was unable to conceive. We read how after Hagar, Sarai’s maidservant, became pregnant from Avram, Sarai treated her harshly. The story continues that Hagar ran away, where she was met with a messenger from God, who instructed Hagar to “shuvi v’hitani” “go back and submit.” Research tells us that survivors of intimate partner violence leave and return to their abusive partner, on average 7 times before leaving for good. It is common that for the one in four (1 in 4) women and one in seven (1 in 7 men) that are victims of intimate partner violence, they will hear phrases similar to that of Hagar, encouraging them to return, to try harder, to work it out. However, survivors deserve to be safe, respected, and supported. This is one of the reasons why Purple Shabbat exists: to raise awareness and to give us the strength to address abuse within Jewish communities. Supporting survivors with a holistic approach means meeting a survivor where they are at, and helping them to “lech lecha” “go forth” in their journey to safety.

After the Darkness: Revisiting Post-Holocaust Theology + Ethics

Join Rabbi Shai Held of Hadar for this 3-part learning series. The experiences of loneliness, abandonment, and devastation that so many people are feeling so deeply right now – all of these are at the heart of post-Holocaust theology. This series will explore the main currents of post-Holocaust Jewish theology through thinkers like Richard Rubenstein, Eliezer Berkovits, Yitz Greenberg, Emil Fackenheim, and Melissa Raphael; and investigate how philosophers of religion grapple with the problem of evil. But rather than just analyze their thought, it will also ask what Jewish theology in the present moment can and should say - and can't and shouldn't say - about grappling with God in the wake of the Shoah.

Classes will be held virtually: Mondays, Oct. 23, 30, Nov. 6 @ 7-8:30pm.
